He is expected to discuss the situation with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in the wake of riots that have claimed nearly 40 lives so far and may visit hospitals where the injured are admitted.

Dr Singh had condemned the violence and expressed his deep anguish over the loss of lives. He had spoken to the Chief Minister and assured all required help from the Centre in dealing with the situation.

Dr Singh also has sanctioned Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 each for the seriously injured in the clashes from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.

Against the backdrop of riots in Muzaffarnagar, the Centre has convened a meeting of National Integration Council (NIC) on September 23 that is expected to focus on communal harmony and related aspects.
