Our Faith in Japan Has Strengthened, Says PM Narendra Modi: Highlights

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing leaders in Tokyo

Tokyo: On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered the keynote address at a business seminar in Tokyo where he spoke at length on India - Japan relations.

Today is day four of his five-day bilateral visit in Japan.

Here are the highlights:

  • There is no better place than India for Japanese business.
  • I have just had 100 days as PM. In the past three days I have seen a  lot of opportunities for India Japan collaboration.
  • When we say 'Make in India,' we mean we will give you an environment where you will be able to meet your product's global demand through low cost manufacturing, ease of business and skilled manpower.
  • We have removed restrictions on 55% of the defence manufacturing. There is a large market within India.
  • India's strength lies in software. You have a competence in hardware. Like software is incomplete without hardware, India is incomplete without Japan and vice versa.
  • The miracle you can achieve in 10 years in Japan, you can do that in two years in India, such are the possibilities there.
  • There is no red tape in India today, there is a red carpet.
  • In the world there is no country that is liberalising as fast as India.
  • India has a government that is working on development, to increase manufacturing.
  • India is giving businessmen a proper environment to grow.
  • There are more than 50 cities in India that are waiting to get metro rail projects. Have you ever seen such business in one country in this one sector?
  • We want to invite Small and Medium Enterprises so that there is job creation, mass scale production and healthy competition.
  • If we give Japan's governance, efficiency & discipline a similar atmosphere in India then they will feel a sense of belonging.
  • I invite all of you to come to India and test your skills and fortune.
  • See our record of 100 days. Our GDP was languishing at 4.5% and now we have achieved a GDP growth rate of 5.7%. This shows that our policies are leading to such results.
  • We have more mobile phones than our population and such is our nature that if advertised well, people buy a newer model the very next day after buying a phone.
  • The small scale industries in Japan are equal to the well-developed industries in India. We do not distinguish between small and big.
  • I trust my strengths less and trust the strengths of the people who meet me more. So it multiplies our strengths in any situation manifold.
  • In areas like solar energy, for people bringing in new technology, sky is the limit.
  • The kind of manpower you need - we are trying to orient our educational institutions. We have given Suzuki the ITIs in villages near their plants and they train manpower as they require.
  • Tourism helps a man become a global citizen but does he lose his identity? So, I believe this is expansion and there is no contradiction.
  • There is contradiction when people take the nationalistic egos and enter into conflict with people. I come from a culture, and that is shared by Japan, look at Buddha - his national character was never in conflict with his global influence.
  • We are ready to give you the facilities you need to "make in India."
