Oppose Reopening of Poppy Husk Vends in Rajasthan: Sukhbir Badal

Bathinda: Punjab government today termed as "unfortunate" the re-opening of poppy husk vends in neighbouring Rajasthan.

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said Punjab was victim of wrong policies dealing with the drug addiction issue.

In a democratic country, two different laws cannot exist on same issue and Punjab government was exploring legal remedy to deal with the situation, he told reporters after foundation stone laying ceremony of the Central University of Punjab at village Ghudda on Bathinda.

Reiterating that drugs were not produced in Punjab in any form, the deputy chief minister emphasised on the need to have uniform policy against drugs menace in states.

Asked about white fly pest attack, Mr Badal said the affected cotton farmers would soon get compensation for the losses incurred.

Strict action would be taken against the companies selling spurious pesticides to vulnerable farmers and no one would be spared, he added.

Mr Badal said the government was going to announce recruitment for one lakh vacancies in various departments to provide job opportunities to the people of Punjab.

The filling of these vacancies, he said, would not only provide the youths job opportunities, but also accelerate development in the state.

He also announced that setting up of meritorious colleges for poor and needy students, on the lines of meritorious schools for them, so they can pursue higher education.
