New Delhi: On a day Manmohan Singh was to make his last speech in Parliament as Prime Minister, there was a special guest - his wife Gursharan Kaur.

Dr Singh, 81, is expected to make his farewell speech this afternoon before the last session of the current Lok Sabha ends today.

"10 years have been a great learning experience," Gursharan Kaur said.

She watched proceedings in the Lok Sabha for 30 minutes from the Speaker's gallery, on a day the house functioned peacefully for the first time in weeks. "It could have been more orderly," she said.

The government has failed to get the opposition on board with its plan to extend the session for key legislation, including anti-corruption bills championed by Rahul Gandhi.

"The intention of the government was to extend house but political parties didn't agree," said Parliamentary affairs Minister Kamal Nath.
