Nitish Kumar Meets PM Modi As Flood Situation Worsens In Bihar

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar will PM Narendra Modi today to discuss flood situation

New Delhi: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi today as the flood situation worsened in the state. More than five lakh people have been affected and over 2 lakh people have reportedly lost their homes in flood-ravaged Bihar.

Here are the latest developments:

  1. After the meeting, Mr Kumar said, "We have requested the PM to send a team of experts to visit the state and review the situation. It is essential to increase the absorption capacity of the river Ganga including deepening the river bed."

  2. Highlighting the problem of silting of rivers, he said, "River is getting shallow due to the deposition of silt and that why we are facing worst floods."

  3. Of the 38 districts of Bihar, nearly 20 districts are flood affected. In the past 3 days, 19 people have died and over 5 lakh people have been displaced. River Sone and Ganga are flowing above the danger mark in almost all the twelve flood-affected districts.

  4. The Centre on Monday night rushed 10 NDRF teams to flood-hit areas of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in order to launch massive relief and rescue operations to help those marooned in these states.

  5. "So far, the NDRF teams have evacuated more than 26,400 people from various flood-prone areas in the country. Besides the rescue work, these teams have provided medical care to the more than 9,100 people in these States," the NDRF said.

  6. In Uttar Pradesh, the situation is no better as the river Ganga and Yamuna have crossed the danger mark. Over two lakh people are affected and the schools in Allahabad and Varanasi have been closed for 2 days.

  7. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday promised the centre's total support to five flood-hit states in rescue and relief operations.

  8. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is closely monitoring the situation, spoke to chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh to take stock of the situation and assured them full support from the centre.

  9. In Madhya Pradesh, where over five lakh people are affected due to floods, water has receded in all the six affected districts.  Most of the displaced have come back to their homes.

  10. However, the Met department has today issued a heavy rain alert for Rewa, Satna, Panna, Katni, Jabalpur. So far there has been no rain. At least 17 people have lost their lives due to floods in Madhya Pradesh.
