Peter Mukherjea was yesterday arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), hours after it filed a chargesheet.
After media tycoon Peter Mukerjea's arrest on Thursday, a senior Mumbai Police officer is under scrutiny in the CBI investigation into the Sheena Bora murder, sources say.
Sheena Bora was murdered in 2012 and her body was dumped in a forest in Raigad near Mumbai allegedly by Peter's wife Indrani Mukerjea, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and her driver Shyam Rai.
A month later, her burnt and decomposed body was found by villagers but the local police dismissed and did not investigate further.
Sources have told NDTV, that there is a possibility that a police officer who allegedly ordered juniors not to file a First Information Report or Accidental Death Report after the body was found, may be named in a supplementary charge sheet for conspiracy.
Only a diary entry was made, which means the recovery of the body was recorded but no investigation took place.
DNA samples were sent but even that was goofed up and the Raigad Police did not even bother following up on the results of the samples. Marks of strangling were a clear indicator that the woman may have been murdered.
What has baffled investigators is why the officer did not think it was necessary to investigate even though there were clear signs of "foul play".
The officer sent his explanation to former Maharashtra police chief Sanjeev Dayal, who forwarded it to the state government. Mr Dayal, who has now retired, refused to comment on the officer's explanation. Sources say the officer has claimed that he had acted according to the rules.
NDTV tried to reach the officer but there was no response.
The CBI has not officially commented on the possibility of more arrests in the case. But Peter Mukerjea's arrest is an indication that anyone who may have been part of the conspiracy will be probed and prosecuted, if necessary.
