New Delhi:
The Delhi Police has reportedly decided to move court seeking cancellation of bail granted to cricketer S Sreesanth and others accused in the Indian Premier League or IPL spot-fixing scam.
According to sources, the Delhi Police will file its plea regarding cancellation of bail soon after it files its chargesheet in the case today.
Former Rajasthan Royals player Sreesanth, his team mates Ajit Chandila and Ankit Chavan and several alleged bookies were arrested by the police in May this year on charges of alleged spot-fixing. Sreesanth had to spend 27 days in Tihar jail here before getting bail on June 11. 20 other accused, including Chavan, are also out on bail. Chandila however is still in judicial custody.
While asking the court to re-evaluate the evidence against the accused who have been granted bail and to reconsider whether they can be held guilty under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), the Delhi Police is likely to argue today that when bail was granted to the players, the investigation was barely a week-old. The police claims it now has more evidence against the accused.
In its chargesheet today, the Delhi Police is likely to name underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his aide Chhota Shakeel as the kingpin of the fixing and betting racket in India.
The 6000-page charge sheet will have annexures including phone conversations, voice sample reports, forensic reports and confessional statements.
The three Rajasthan Royals players and 11 alleged bookies were arrested from Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Delhi during the sixth edition of the IPL in May. 15 more people were arrested from different parts of the country later.
