In drought, monkeys feast on wheat

New Delhi:

Monkeys leap about nibbling on the grain at a warehouse in Delhi.

They're snacking on precious wheat. The grain lies exposed to sun and rain in torn bags. The end result -- rot and waste.

This  year, the government has procured 53 million tonnes of grain. Half of that is stored in Food Corporation of India godowns. Like the one where we find the monkeys running riot.

Recently, the government has admitted that 6 lakh tonnes of food grains have been wasted because of poor storage.

Food that could have fed 1 crore people for a year.
