Madhya Pradesh Exam Scam: Congress Workers Protest Near Assembly, Demand Chief Minister's Resignation

Congress workers protest outside Madhya Pradesh assembly.

Bhopal:

Congress workers took their protests against the ruling BJP - over the multi-crore Madhya Pradesh exam scam - to the state assembly today. The police had to use water canons to disperse the hundreds of protesters who had gathered there.

The Budget session of the state Assembly also started on a stormy note today: Governor Ram Naresh Yadav had to cut short his opening speech after Congress lawmakers shouted slogans against him. The assembly was adjourned shortly after.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh had earlier this week filed an affidavit with the Special Investigation Team which is monitoring the scam. He alleged that the data retrieved from the laptop of the main accused was tampered to shield Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

The Chief Minister told NDTV yesterday that he is considering legal action against Mr Singh.

Shailesh Yadav, the son of the Governor, has been named in the charge-sheet on the scam. Shailesh was named by alleged middlemen Veerpal Yadav. Dhanraj Yada, the former Officer on Special Duty for the Governor, has earlier been arrested for his alleged role in the scam.

"The Governor and his son are involved in the case just like the Chief Minister is. We demand the resignation of both. We will not disrupt the proceedings of the House but we will protest," said Leader of opposition Satyadev Katare.

The Governor is yet to comment on the protests.

The ruling BJP has said that the sloganeering by the Congress lawmakers in the House was "wrong".

"I have attended assembly sessions for 40 years, but never in my life have I seen such protests," said state Home Minister Babulal Gaur.

"If they wanted to make a point against the Governor, they should have waited for their turn; they should not have disrupted the speech," said Mr Gaur.
