'Enlarged heart, No Injuries,' Said Post Mortem Report of Vyapam Journalist

Journalist Akshay Singh, who died while investigating the Vyapam scam

New Delhi: The journalist who died on Saturday while investigating the Vyapam scam had no external or internal injury marks, a post mortem conducted the same night said.

"The appearance does not indicate anything suspicious," said the initial report, adding that Akshay Singh, 38, had an enlarged heart with thickened walls. The weight of the heart was more than normal and the lungs were deeply congested, the report said.

Doctors at Delhi's AIIMS - or the All India Institute of Medical Sciences - are now investigating the death after the journalist's family questioned the post mortem conducted at Dahod, Gujarat, and the assessment that he had died of a heart attack.<div id='ndtvrelcontent'></

Mr Singh was investigating the deaths in the Vyapam scam involving politicians and bureaucrats allegedly accepting kickbacks for allowing imposters to take the recruitment exam for government jobs and admission to colleges.

On Saturday, he was at the house of a woman, Namrata Damor, who was killed in 2012, when he suddenly collapsed.

According to the woman's father, Mehtab Damor, the journalist was waiting for photocopies of Namrata's medical report and was chatting when he started frothing at the mouth. "I got water...He couldn't drink the water and became unconscious. We immediately took him to a government hospital. The doctor said his heart is not beating and he had no facilities there to revive him," Mr Damor said.

The doctor, Kailash Patidar, had said the journalist had suffered a heart attack. But Mr Singh's family said he had no health problems. Under pressure, the Madhya Pradesh government referred the case to AIIMS, which is examining his viscera samples.

Along with Akshay Singh and a medical college dean who died on Sunday, the number of deaths linked to the Vyapam scam is 35.
