Day before counting, Congress, SP patch up

New Delhi:

AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh, who was not exactly on good terms with his Samajwadi Party counterpart Amar Singh, on Thursday rang him up to enquire about his health.

Digvijay Singh, who was blamed by Amar Singh for the collapse of seat-adjustment talks in UP, also used the opportunity to say sorry to him if any of his statements had caused him hurt. Amar Singh also reciprocated his sentiments.

In the midst of phone-diplomacy, Congress denied that Gandhi had spoken to BSP supremo Mayawati, whose party is part of the Third Front.

With only one day to go for counting of votes and no party sure of which way it is going to go, the Congress and BJP were on Thursday frantically chalking out strategies to reach out to potential allies to cobble up the magic 272 seats in the new Lok Sabha.

Election strategy at work

  • Sonia Gandhi has been calling Lalu Yadav, meeting Sharad Pawar
  • L K Advani met top BJP leaders including Rajnath, Modi
  • And the BJP now has Soli Sorabjee, Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad working on the constitutional elements

Seeking to undo the bickering with its UPA allies, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Lok Janshakti Party and the Samajwadi Party (SP), the Congress reached out to them.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi held consultations with NCP Sharad Pawar, who met her at her residence last night for over half an hour.  She also spoke on telephone to estranged allies RJD chief Lalu Prasad and LJP President Ram Vilas Paswan, whose party candidates had fought against Congress in Bihar.
