Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reviewed the situation arising from the threat of cyclonic storm 'Phet' in the Arabian Sea which could possibly hit the coastal regions of the state.

Modi asked top officials to monitor the situation and prepare a contingency plan to deal with any eventuality, an official statement said.

According to Indian Meteorological Department, "the deep depression over the west central and adjoining east central Arabian Sea intensified into a cyclonic storm, 'Phet' and was centred 1,030 km south west of Naliya in Kutch district of Gujarat".

"It could intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm and move slowly in north westerly directions in next 24 hours and then recurve north eastwards towards Gujarat and the adjoining Pakistan coast," IMD warned.

The fishermen in the state have been warned not to venture in the sea from June 2.

Fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rains could occur over coastal areas of Gujarat on June 3, IMD said.
