Cong core group clears panel on Telangana: Sources

New Delhi: The Congress core group on Telangana on Friday night cleared mechanism for separate Telangana state, sources told NDTV.

Sources also told that the Telangana mechanism will be announced on Monday, February 1.

Top brass of Congress, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party president Sonia
Gandhi, are understood to have finalised the composition of a committee.

The party core group held deliberations on the Telangana issue against the backdrop of the fresh deadline of February 7 set by Joint Action Committee (JAC) spearheading the movement for the separate state for action on formation of the state.

Party sources said former Supreme Court judge B N Srikrishna is likely to head the committee to be announced next week by Home Minister P Chidambaram to look into the mechanism for formation of Telangana. Names of other members of the Committee were nearly final, sources said.

The meeting was also attended by Law Minister M Veerappa Moily, who is Congress in-charge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh.

The JAC had earlier set January 29 as the deadline for announcement of the Centre's action on Telangana formation but extended the same today.

Justice Srikrishna had probed the Mumbai riots of 1993 which broke out in the wake of Babri Masjid demolition. (With PTI inputs)
