Dispur: Amid a stormy winter session of the state assembly, the BJP is taking out a massive protest march against what it calls "misrule and misgovernance" by the Congress government in Assam today.

Authorities have put up barricades in Dispur - the capital of Assam - where the assembly is situated.

Some BJP workers have broken them and crossed over. Police have used smoke bombs to disperse the protesters.

The march is being led by senior BJP leaders in the state. Union sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal is expected to join as well.

Protests have intensified in the state after the Assembly Speaker suspended six BJP and nine expelled Congress lawmakers from taking part in the proceedings two days ago for disorderly conduct.

About 50,000 BJP supporters are expected to march down to Dispur but the administration plans to crack down on the protesters.

Borders of the city have been sealed and BJP supporters coming from other parts of Assam will be stopped as prohibitory orders are in place.
