Aman Kachroo case: All accused out on bail

Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh: Sixteen months after his death, Aman Kachroo's seniors - accused of ragging him - are out on bail.

On Saturday, a fast track court granted bail to Navin Verma, Abhinav Verma, Ajay Verma and Mukul Sharma, all charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The judge said as statements of all witnesses had been recorded and evidence collected there was no need to keep them in custody.

"All the statements from students have been recorded. Now the police and the doctors' statements are left," said the defence lawyer Ajay Sipahiya.

The 19-year-old student died in March last year after the four seniors beat him up in his hostel at a medical college in Himachal Pradesh.

Last year, the public rage and media focus after Aman's death had led to the principal of the college being sacked, and ragging being made a punishable offence in Himachal Pradesh.

Also, the Supreme Court had asked all states to set up an anti-ragging committee.

Aman's father Rajendra Kachroo had started a campaign against ragging with a helpline which was soon flooded with calls from students.

But he says Aman's tormentors getting bail may send out the wrong message.

"I am really disappointed from the point of view of the campaign. Because it conveys a wrong message, one of chalta hai, back to the business. It's not just this campaign, there are many other aspects that we had planned to execute since last year. I virtually spend every day campaigning on this, and I hope somebody will listen someday," said Rajendra Kachroo.

He may have lost his son, but he hopes he does not lose this cause.
