New Delhi:  Five terrorists who escaped in October 2013 from a jail in Madhya Pradesh could be planning to carry out terror attacks on behalf of Pakistan's ISI, said senior intelligence sources on the condition of anonymity.

A high-alert has been sounded across the country, said intelligence agency sources to NDTV, who said phone intercepts a week ago alerted them to the terror plan.

The men, accused of being members of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India or SIMI, attacked two constables and grabbed their guns before managing to break out of a prison in Khandwa.

In September this year, a blast at a house in Uttar Pradesh's Bijnore district led the police to search the home. Laptops and other belongings left behind led the police to believe that the men who had broken out of jail were using the house as a hide-out.

Last week, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and top army officials in Kashmir blamed Pakistan for a series of terror strikes on Friday, in which 11 policemen and soldiers were killed.
The attacks came in the midst of a five-phase election; the PM has said they were a retaliation to the record 70% voters turnout.

The Home Minister last month blamed Pakistan "state actors" and singled out the ISI - the country's elite spy agency - for orchestrating terror attacks in India.
