Srinagar: Three terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces on Tuesday in North Kashmir's Handwara. An army major, who was injured in the firing, died hours later.

The police had gathered intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area. They cordoned it off and launched a search operation but came under heavy firing from the terrorists.

Three terrorists were gunned down. AK47 rifles among other arms were recovered from their possession.

An army officer was injured in the firing and was airlifted to an army hospital in Srinagar where he died.

This was the second major encounter in Kashmir in less than 12 hours. Earlier, a terrorist was killed in an encounter in Bandipora. The gunbattle also claimed the lives of three soldiers. Fifteen security personnel, who were injured were airlifted to an army hospital in Srinagar. The condition of some of them is said to be critical.
