26/11 Report: Mumbai police chief indicted

Mumbai:

R D Pradhan Committee report that inquired into lapses on the night of 26/11 is yet to be made public but NDTV has learnt that the report criticizes Mumbai Police Commissioner Hasan Gafoor for not taking charge that night.

Government sources say the report blames him for lack of coordination among senior policemen.

It says he should not have stayed in one spot and should have visited different terror sites to assess what was needed.

Hasan Gafoor has refused to comment on the findings.

The report is not all anti-police, it praises AN Roy, the Director General of state police and Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Rakesh Maria in charge of the control room that night and several junior officers.

The report slams the police for ignoring the Standard Operating Procedure, rules laid down on what to do in an emergency.

According to the rules, Maria should have been on the field and Joint Commissioner of Law and order K L Prasad who was at attack sites should have taken over the control room.

The report is expected to be tabled in the state Assembly, which is in session.

Mumbai attacks were the worst terror attacks the country has ever seen. But now after this report even more questions will be raised about whether the siege could have ended sooner and if more lives could have been saved.
