Do I have high ferritin levels?
Question
I am 25 years of age and recently got my serum ferritin test done and the result was 93.5. The reference range is 22 - 322 but my doctor says that I have high ferritin level and it is best if it is under 50. What is your opinion?

Serum ferritin levels reflect the amount of storage iron in the body but its levels increase when there is inflammation (from any cause) or tissue damage i.e. their level may increase in fever, acute infections, rheumatoid arthritis and other chronic inflammatory disorders. Low levels always indicate iron deficiency in the body. The biological reference interval varies from lab to lab but is generally 20 to 300 ng/ml. Your levels are normal and there is no need to bother.
