Yami Gautam prefers Bollywood more than regional cinema

Highlights

  • Actress Yami Gautam, who is making her Bollywood debut with John Abraham's maiden home production Vicky Donor, says her focus is now on doing more Hindi films than regional ones.
  • In 2009, Yami made her debut in filmdom with Kannada movie Ullasa Utsaha. Last year, she ventured into Telugu cinema with Nuvvila, following which she acted in a Punjabi film Ek Noor. Now she is all set for her Bollywood stint.
  • "If something really exceptional comes by, then only I will do regional films. My priority will be Hindi films. Sometimes it is difficult to accommodate things, but if good work and exceptional roles are there in regional films then why not," Yami told PTI.
  • In the past we have seen actresses from down south like Asin, Genelia D'Souza, Kajal Agarwal (Singham), Ileana D'Cruz (Barfee) entering Hindi film industry.
  • "I have prioritised content over medium. I did not want to do Hindi films just for the heck of it or else I would have done it long back. I had the opportunity but it is about the right role, script and director, and Vicky Donor provided me right platform.
  • "The reason for doing regional films was not to just be in films or for added remuneration but there were some really different roles. As far as Hindi films are concerned, it is important to make the right choices and I think I have done that," the 25-year-old said.
  • In Vicky Donor, Ayushman plays the central character of Vicky, a Punjabi cricket player cum sperm donor in love with a Bengali girl, played by Yami.
  • The film releasing tomorrow, is directed by Shoojit Sircar and is based on the concept of sperm donation and infertility.
  • "The subject of this film is sensitive and bold but I consider it as the USP of the movie. After having seen the film, I feel I am lucky to have got this opportunity. I am happy with the way the film has shaped up," Yami said.
  • The young entrant feels it is the second film in a person's career that puts more pressure and responsibility on an actor.
  • "The second film brings in even more pressure, in terms of responsibility towards your own self, towards the audience. What drew me to do Vicky Donor was the uniqueness, subject and the role. So the next movie that I do has to be on the same line creatively and commercially," Yami said.
