Rajkumar Hirani: Movies Should Not Be Judged by Box Office Numbers

Rajkumar Hirani said that Masaan is extremely well-written

Mumbai: After delivering one of the biggest hits in the Hindi film industry with PK, award winning-filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani is not much bothered about box office numbers.

At a special screening of Masaan, he said: "A film should not be judged by the box office numbers anyway. Several films which have been doing well at the box office are forgotten the next day. But this film will stay inside us for many years as a good film does and that matters more than box office."

Neeraj Ghaywan's internationally acclaimed film Masaan, has been appreciated by the celebrities at various screenings. Mr Hirani was completely moved by the film and its concept.

"The film is extremely beautiful, well-written and well-directed. And all the actors have done a fine job. I actually did not know what I was going to watch but one thing I can say is that I thoroughly enjoyed the film," he said.

Masaan features Sanjay Mishra, Richa Chadha, Vicky Kaushal, Shweta Tripathi, Saurabh Chadhary, Vineet Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi and Nikhil Sahni.

The PK director added that the performance of Vicky needs a special mention.

"Acting was the most beautiful thing, I felt. Especially Vicky Kaushal who is Shyam Kaushal's son, needs a special mention. The manner in which he has performed, you don't feel that he is actually acting. His performance is extremely effortless. He is looking quite mature and in no way does it look like his first film," he said.

Mr Hirani also stated that films like Masaan find their own way to platforms like Oscars.

Masaan, which has already released in France, will hit the screens in India on July 24.

The movie has won two prestigious awards at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
