Los Angeles: Actor Gerard Butler's upcoming drama Geostorm has been pushed by three months and will now release on January 13, 2017, said The Hollywood Reporter.

Warner Bros had originally dated the film for an October 21 release next year.

The sci-fi adventure film, which stars the 45-year-old actor, marks veteran writer-producer Dean Devlin's debut as a director. Mr Devlin had teamed up with Roland Emmerich to produce 1996's Independence Day. (Also Read: Independence Day Sequel Brings Back Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch)

Written by Mr Devlin himself, Geostorm follows a satellite designer (Gerard Butler) who heads into space to prevent climate-controlling satellites from creating a man-made storm of epic proportions when he and his estranged brother learn of a plot to assassinate the president.

However, January 2016 already has four films - Boss Baby, The Dark Tower, The Magnificent Seven and Power Rangers - lined up for release.
