About Dakshina Kannada

The Dakshin Kannada Lok Sabha constituency consists of Belthangady, Moodabidri, Mangalore City North, Mangalore City South, Mangalore, Bantwal, Puttur and Sullia assembly constituencies. Among these the Sullia assembly seat is reserved for scheduled caste category. The Dakshin Kannada constituency went to polls on April 18, in the second phase of the 17th Lok Sabha election. A total of 16,97,417 electorates have been registered to vote, among which 99 are of the third gender.

Dakshin Kannada is among the 27 other constituencies in Karnataka which voted in the second and third phase of general election 2019. Voting in Karnataka was held in two phases - April 18 and April 23. In the second phase of the Karnataka elections, Chikkodi, Belgaum, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Raichur, Bidar, Koppal, Bellary, Haveri, Dharwad, Uttara Kannada, Davanagere and Shimoga constituencies in Karnataka voted.

Two-time MP and BJP candidate Nalin Kumar Kateel is contesting for the third consecutive time. Mr Kateel had a strong victory last time by a margin of 1,43,709 votes. BJP got 53.55% of the total votes in this constituency. Congress candidate Janardhana Poojary had the second largest vote count.

Among other contestants independent candidates Maxim Pinto and Deepak Rajesh Coelho and Hindustan Janata Party nominated Supreeth Kumar Poojary are contesting again this time. In the last election, Mr Pinto and Mr Coelho got 0.09% and 0.08% votes, respectively. Supreeth Kumar Poojary had received 657 votes in the 2014 general election.

Other key contestants are Congress candidate Mithun M Rai and BSP nominated S.Sathish Salian.
