About Chitradurga

The Chitradurga Lok Sabha seat voted on April 18 in the second phase of 2019 general election. The Lok Sabha constituency consists of Molakalmuru, Challakere, Chitradurga, Hiriyur, Hosadurga, Holalkere, Sira and Pavagada assembly segments. Among these, four seats are reserved for candidates belonging to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe categories. The election commission record says a total of 17,47,885 electorates were registered in this constituency including 8,63,627 female voters, 8,84,150 male voters, and 108 third gender voters.

Chitradurga along with 27 other constituencies in Karnataka voted in the second and third phase of 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Traditionally a Congress bastion, Chitradurga seat, was won by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2009.

In 2014, though BJP had lost the Chitradurga Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 1,01,291 votes, it was ahead of the ruling party Congress in Chitradurga and Holalkere assembly seats.

Sitting MP and Congress candidate BN Chandrappa will contest for the Chitradurga seat this time as well. Mr Chandrappa holds a Masters degree in Sociology from the CV Raman University, Karnataka. An agriculturist and educationist, Mr Chandrappa, is a member of the Consultative Committee, Ministry of Agriculture since May 2014. For the past twenty-five years, he has been fighting for the cause of upliftment of the poor and the under privileged. He runs educational Institute involving Nursery to Secondary School and B.Ed College for workers' children.

Among other key contenders are BJP candidate A. Narayanaswamy and Bahujan Samaj Party nominated CU Mahanthesh.

A total of 19 candidates are contesting for the Chitradurga seat this time.
