Bhawanathpur Vidhan Sabha constituency is one of the 81 legislative assembly constituencies of Jharkhand. The constituency lies in the Garhwa district of the eastern state.
Bhawanathpur voted on November 30 along with Chatra, Gumla, Bishunpur, Lohardaga, Manika, Latehar, Panki, Daltonganj, Bishrampur, Chhatarpur, Hussainabad and Garhwa vidhan sabha constituencies.
Polling for the legislative assembly seats of Jharkhand was held in five phases from November 30 to December 20.
The constituency comprises 99% rural population. 26.16% of the population belongs to Scheduled Caste category and 14.37% of the population belongs to Scheduled Tribes.
28 candidates are in fray for the Bhawnathpur assembly seat this time, among which are 12 independent candidates.
Sitting MLA Bhanu Pratap Shahi contested for the Bhawnathpur seat with BJP ticket. Former MLA Anant Pratap Deo would contest as an independent candidate.
Top contenders, Bhanu Pratap Shahi and Anant Pratap Deo have contested for the Bhawnathpur seat twice.
In 2014, Bhanu Pratap Shahi had won the seat with Navjawaan Sangharsh Morcha (NSM) party ticket. He had won the seat defeating BJP's Anant Pratap Deo by a margin of 2,661 votes. NSM party had received 58,908 votes.
Anant Pratap Deo had contested for the Bhawnathpur Vidhan Sabha seat with a Congress ticket in 2009 and had defeated Bhanu Pratap Shahi by a margin of 22,168 votes. In the last election 997 votes were registered under NOTA option.
