Live : Darbhanga Assembly Election 2020

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Kirti Azad won from the Darbhanga constituency in Bihar with a BJP ticket. While Kirti Azad garnered 3,14,949 votes, his opponent Ashraf Fatmi from RJD managed to get 2,79,906 votes. Kirti Azad has been a member of Indian Cricket team. 

A cursory look at the history of this constituency reveals that it was a stronghold of Congress from 1957 to 1972. From 1957 to 1962, Narayan Das from Congress was elected on this seat followed by SN Sinha in 1967, Vinodanand Jha in 1971, and L N Mishra in 1972 by polls, all on Congress ticket. 

In 1977 Surendra Jha won from Darbhanga on a ticket by BLD. In 1980, the seat was reclaimed by Congress candidate Hari Nath. In 1984 Vijay Kumar from Lok Dal party won from Darbhanga. In 1989 Shakeel Rehman from Janta Dal won followed by Ashraf Fatmi in 1991 and 1996 also on a Janta Dal ticket. 

In 1998, Ashraf Fatmi again won the seat with an RJD ticket. In 1999 Kirti Azad won the seat on a BJP ticket followed by Ashraf Fatmi in 2004 who contested on an RJD ticket. Kirti Azad then won the seat again in 2009 on a BJP ticket. 

The Darbhanga Constituency has six Vidhan Sabha divisions - Gaura Baurampur, Benipur, Alinagar, Darbhanga Rural, Darbhanga, and Bahadurpur. 

The General Elections 2019 in Darbhanga will be held in the fourth phase on April 29. 

Kirti Azad who is the sitting MP from Darbhanga joined Congress in February this year. BJP has fielded Gopal Ji Thakur while JD (U) is fielding Ajay Kumar Mandal. Gopal Ji Thakur is currently serving as the Vice President of the state unit of Bhartiya Janta Party.
