About Bhagalpur

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Shailesh Kumar is the current mamber of parliament or MP from Bhagalpur constituency in Bihar. He garnered 3,67,623 votes as against BJP's Shahnawaz Hussain who received 3,58,138 votes.

Under the Bhagalpur Lok Sabha constituency, there are six Vidhan Sabha divisions which include Bihpur, Gopalpur, Kahalgaon, Bhagalpur, Pirpainty, and Nathnagar. The Pirpainty seat is reserved for scheduled caste candidates only.

Representing the NDA alliance, Ajay Kumar Mandal will contest from Bhagalpur on a JD(U) ticket. The General Election 2019 in Bhagalpur was held in the second phase - on April 18, 2019. As part of the 'Mahagathbandhan' alliance, sitting MP Shailesh Kumar who also goes by the name Bulo Mandal will contest from Bhagalpur on an RJD ticket.

From the Bhagalpur Lok Sabha seat, Congress's Banarashi Prasad Jhunjhunwala had won in 1957. Congress's Bhagwat Jha Azad followed him and was elected five times (on a Congress ticket) between 1962 and 1984, except for in 1977 when Ramji Singh from Janata Party was elected.

From 1989 to 1996, Chunchun Prasad Yadav from Janata Dal was elected thrice. In 1998, BJP's Prabhash Chandra Tiwari won from the Bhagalpur seat. In 1999, Subodh Rai from CPM won the Lok Sabha seat.

In 2004, BJP's Sushil Kumar Modi won the constituency. In the 2006 by-polls and 2009 Lok Sabha Elections, BJP's Shahnawaz Hussain was elected.
