Live : Begusarai Assembly Election 2020

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Dr. Bhola Singh from BJP won the Begusarai seat in Bihar with 4,28,227 votes. Dr. Bhola Singh defeated Rashtriya Janta Dal candidate Tanveer Hasan who received 3,69,892 votes. 

From 1952 to 1962, Mathura Prasad Mishra from Congress was elected thrice from the Begusarai constituency. In 1967, Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate Yogendra Sharma was elected. In 1971 and 1977, Shyam Nandan Mishra was elected, once on Congress ticket and again on Janta Party ticket. 

Krishna Shahi from Congress was elected twice, once in 1980 and then in 1984. In 1989, Lalit Vijay Singh from Janta Dal was elected from the Begusarai seat. Krishna Shahi again won in the 1991 elections. In 1996 Independent candidate Rajendra Kumar Singh was elected. 

In 1998, Congress' Rajo Singh was elected while in 1999 RJD's Rajvanshi Kumar won the Lok Sabha elections. In 2004 and 2009, Rajeev Ranjan Singh and Dr. Monazeer Hasan were elected respectively, both candidates were from JDU. 

Begusarai Lok Sabha constituency has seven Vidhan Sabha divisions namely Cheria Bariyarpur, Bachhwada, Teghra, Matihani, Sahebpur Kamal, Begusarai, and Bakhri. 

The General Election 2019 in Begusarai will be held in the fourth phase on April 29. To contest the elections from Begusarai, BJP has fielded Giriraj Singh who was elected to the Parliament in 2014 from Nawada constituency. Giriraj Singh currently holds the office of Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the Government of India. 

The polls in Begusarai have attracted national attention since it will witness the tussle between BJP's veteran leader and Kanhaiya Kumar, the student leader from JNU, who will contest the election on a CPI ticket.
