About Araria

The current member of parliament from Bihar's Araria is Sarfaraz Alam of the Rashtriya Janata Dal or RJD. He succeeded his father - veteran RJD leader Mohammed Taslimuddin - who died in September 2017. In the 2018 by-elections, Sarfaraz Alam resigned from Janata Dal (United) and joined RJD.

In 2014, Mohammed Taslimuddin had registered victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He won with 4,07,978 votes as against the 2,61,474 votes garnered by BJP's Pradeep Kumar Singh.

A look at the history of this seat reveals that in 1967 and 1971, it was won by Congress' Tulmohan Ram. In 1977, it was won by Bhartiya Lok Dal member Mahendra Narayan Sardar and was reclaimed by Congress' Dumar Lal in 1980 and 1984.

In 1989, 1991, and 1996 Janata Dal's Sukhdeo Paswan won from this seat, while in 1998 BJP's Ram Das, in 1999 Sukhdeo Paswan won the seat with an RJD ticket. Sukhdeo Paswan then went on to win the seat again in 2004 with a ticket from BJP.

BJP won the seat again in 2009 with its candidate Pradeep Kumar.

Under the Araria constituency, there are 6 Legislative Assembly seats which include Narpatganj, Raniganj, Forbesganj, Araria, Jokhihat, and Sikti. 

In the 2019 general elections, BJP has fielded Pradeep Kumar Singh from Araria constituency. The Lok Sabha Election 2019 in Araria was held on April 23. The result will be declared along with the remaining 542 parliamentary constituencies on May 23.
