About Silchar

In 2014 general elections, former union minister Santosh Monhan Dev's daughter Sushmita Dev (Indian National Congress or Congress) was elected from the Silchar Lok Sabha constituency with a margin of 35,241 votes. Ms Dev was polled 3,36,451 votes while Kabindra Purkayastha of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), her nearest rival and 2009 Member of Parliament from the constituency, secured 3,01,210 votes.

Purkayastha had represented the constituency twice before 2009, in 1991 and in 1998.

Silchar was represented by late Santosh Mohan Dev of Congress five times. He was the union minister of state for communications during 1986-1988 and the minister of state for home from 1988- 1989. He was also the union minister of state for steel (independent charge) in the PV Narasimha Rao government in 1991. The Congress veteran, who died in 2017, was Heavy Industry Minister in the UPA-I government led by former prime minister Manmohan Singh.

In Silchar, there are 13 candidates with sitting Congress MP and All India Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev being in a direct contest with BJP nominee and MLA Rajdeep Roy.

Voting for the Silchar Lok Sabha constituency, a Bengali-dominated area, took place in the second phase of general elections on April 18. 79.25 per cent polling was recorded in Silchar.
