Live : Lakhimpur Assembly Election 2021

Assam's Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency will vote on April 11. The constituency is divided into segments - Majuli, Naoboicha, Lakhimpur, Dhakuakhana, Dhemaji, Jonai, Chabua, Doom Dooma and Sadiya. Four of these segments are reserved for the scheduled tribes. In the 17th Lok Sabha election, 11 candidates will be contesting from the Lakhimpur seat.

This time, Congress has fielded Anil Borgohain as its Lakhimpur candidate. He will contest against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and sitting MP Pradan Baruah.

Pradan Baruah was elected to the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat in 2016 by-election after the elected Member of Parliament Sarbanand Sonowal became the Chief Minister of Assam. Mr Baruah had defeated Congress contender Dr Hema Hari Prasanna Pegu by a margin of 1,90,219 votes.

Ranee Narah had contested on the Congress ticket and got 3,20,405 votes, which was 2,92,138 votes lesser than winning candidate Sarbananda Sonowal. She has been elected to the Lok Sabha thrice from this seat.

In 2004, Asom Gana Parishad candidate Arun Kumar Sarmah had won the seat. He had succeeded and again was preceded by Ranee Narah.

CPI (M) nominated Amiya Kumar Handique, another key contestant this time, secured 20,613 votes in 2014 election.

Other contestants are: Arup Kalita from CPI, Anup Pratim Borbaruah from Nationalist Congress party, Ubaidur Rahman from Asom Jana Morcha, Dilip Moran from Assam Distri Party, Bhupen Narah from Voters Party International and Hemkanta Miri from Socialist Unity Centre of India.

Two independent candidates will also contest for the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat.
