About Karimganj

In 2014 general elections, Radheshyam Biswas of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won from the Karimganj constituency with a margin of 1,02,094 votes by defeating Krishna Das of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The AIUDF candidate secured 3,62,866 votes while the BJP nominee was polled 2,60,772.

Indian National Congress (INC or Congress) held this constituency four times before 2014 general elections after it wrested the constituency from BJP in 1998. Dwaraka Nath Das of BJP had represented the Karimganj constituency twice in 1991 and 1996. For almost three decades, Congress's Nihar Ranjan Laskar had represented this constituency five times in 60s, 70s and 80s.

The Karimganj (SC) seat, which is witnessing a triangular contest this time, has the highest number of 14 candidates in the second phase elections in Assam including sitting AIUDF MP Radheyshyam Biswas, BJPMLA Kripanath Mallah and Congress candidate Swarup Das.

In 2019 general elections, on the polling day, Karimganj witnessed 73.15 per cent voter turnout. The seat which went to 2019 Lok Sabha polls on April 18, recorded a turnout of women voters, 78.27 per cent, as against 68.43 male voters in the constituency.

In Karimganj reserved constituency of the Barak valley, there are nearly 8 lakh Muslim voters.
