About Jorhat

Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency in Assam consists of 10 assembly segments - Jorhat, Titabar, Mariani, Teok, Amguri, Nazira, Mahmara, Sonari, Thowra and Sibsagar. The Lok Sabha seat votes on April 11.

CPI candidate Kanak Gogoi will lock horns with BJP contender Topon Kumar Gogoi. Among the other key contestants are Trinamool's Ribulaya Gogoi and Congress candidate Sushanta Borgohain.

Former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi was elected to the 5th and 6th Lok Sabha from the Jorhat seat.

A total of eight candidates will be contesting from the Jorhat seat. Arbin Kumar Boruah and Nandita Nag contesting as independents.

Raj Kumar Duwara and Kamala Raj Konwar will contest on National People's Party and All India Forward Bloc tickets, respectively.

Congress had a stronghold on the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat till 2014 except in 1984 when Asom Gana Parishad candidate Parag Chaliha won the seat.

In 2014 general election, BJP's Kamakhya Prasad Tasa defeated the six-time lawmaker, Bijoy Krishna Handique. BJP had won the seat by a margin of more than 1 lakh votes.

In the last election, more than 14 thousand votes were registered under NOTA in this Lok Sabha seat
