In the 2014 general elections, Bijoya Chakravarty was elected from Gauhati seat in Assam. She contested on a ticket from BJP and received 7,64,985 votes. Her closest opponent was Manash Borah from Congress who received 4,49,201 votes.

In the 2009 general elections, Bijoya Chakravarty from BJP was elected with 4,96,047 votes. Her closest opponent was Congress' Capt. Robin Bordoloi who received 4,84,192 votes.

In 1971, Dinesh Chandra Goswami from Congress was elected from Gauhati seat. In 1977, Renuka Devi Barktaki from BLD was elected.

In 1985, Dinesh Goswami, an independent candidate, was elected to parliament from Gauhati. In 1991, Kirip Chaliha was elected from Gauhati on a ticket from Congress. In 1996, Prabin Prasad Sarmah was elected on a ticket from AGP.

In 1998, Bhubaneswar Kalita was elected on a ticket from Congress. In 1999, Bijoya Chakravarty was elected on a ticket from BJP. Then in 2004, Kirip Chaliha was elected on a ticket from Congress.

In the 2019 general election, Queen Oja will contest on a ticket from BJP, Bobbeeta Sharma will contest on a ticket from Congress, Manoj Sharma will contest on a ticket from the All India Trinamool Congress, and Avijit Chakraborty will contest on a ticket from Bharatiya Gana Parishad. There are six independent candidates in the race.

There are ten assembly segments under the Gauhati Lok Sabha constituency. These include Dudhnai (ST), Boko (SC), Chaygaon, Palasbari, Jalukbari, Dispur, Guwahati East, Guwahati West, Hajo, and Barkhetry.
