About Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh is one of the 14 constituencies which comprises the north-eastern state of Assam. The nine assembly segments of this constituency--Moran, Dibrugarh, Lahowal, Duliajan, Tingkhong, Naharkaria, Tinsukia, Digboi and Margherita--will vote on April 11. A total of 8 candidates will be contesting from this seat, including 5-time Lok Sabha lawmawer Paban Singh Ghatowar and sitting Lok Sabha lawmaker Rameswar Teli.

Paban Singh Ghatowar has represented the Dibrugarh seat in parliament in 1991, 1996, 1998 and 1999 and again in 2009, but lost in 2014 to Rameshwar Teli. In 2004, Sarbananda Sonowal, the 14th Chief Minister of Assam, was elected to Lok Sabha from this constituency. In the 2014 election, Mr Sonowal was elected from Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency.

Earlier, Rameswar Teli contested from the seat as a BJP candidate and won, defeating his nearest rival Paban Singh Ghatowar of Congress party. Both of them are the key contenders for the 17th Lok Sabha election as well.

4 out of 8 contestants are independent candidates.

Among other contenders are Dr Titus Bhengra nominated by the Bahujan Mukti Party and Bhaben Baruah representing National People's Party.
