About Barpeta

In the 2014 General Elections, Siraj Uddin Ajmal from AIUDF was elected from Barpeta in Assam. He received 3,94,702 votes. His closest opponent was Chandra Mohan Patowary from BJP who received 3,52,361 votes. 

In the 2009 General Elections, Ismail Hussain from Congress was elected form the Barpeta seat. He received 3,22,137 votes. His closest opponent was Bhupen Ray from AGP who received 2,91,708 votes. 

In the 1971 Lok Sabha elections, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, a Congress candidate, was elected from Barpeta. In 1977, Ismail Hossain Khan, another Congress candidate, was elected from Barpeta. In 1985, Ataur Rahman, an independent candidate, was elected. 

In 1991 and 1996, Uddhab Barman from CPM was elected from Barpeta. In 1998, A.F. Golam Osmani, who contested on a ticket from UMFA, was elected. In 1999 and 2004, A.F. Golam Osmani was elected again but on a ticket from Congress. 

In the General Election 2019, Congress has fielded Abdul Khaleque, AIUDF has fielded Rafiqul Islam, Ashahak Ali Dewan is the candidate for All India Trinamool Congress, and Kumar Deepak Das is Asom Gana Parishad's candidate. There's only one independent candidate in race - Arfan Ali. 

There are ten assembly segments under the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency. These include Bongaigaon, Abhayapuri North, Abhayapuri South, Patacharkuchi, Barpeta, Jania, Baghbar, Sarukhetri, Chenga, and Dharmapur.
