JNU Issue: Suspended Students Call For University Strike, HRD Minister Says Ready To Meet Those Having Grievances
JNU: Suspended Students Called For A University Strike Today In The Campus
New Delhi: Amidst protests by students in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) over the criteria related to admission in PhDs and M Phil, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar today said that he is open to meeting those who have grievances. Meanwhile 'Committee of Suspended Students for Social Justice' called for a 'Total University Strike' today demanding 'Call emergency AC Meeting to resolve the pending issues of social justice'. Earlier, following protests from students, JNU had decided that the admission policy for MPhil and PhD programmes will continue to have a weightage of 80 per cent for entrance exam and 20 per cent for viva voce.

"Whatever the UGC has given, the rules for PhD admissions, are world recognised rules and are implemented without complaint in 799 universities. If there is problem for one University, I am always open to meeting anybody," Javadekar said. He, however, added that those who are protesting have not sought his appointment.

The students group which called for University Strike demanded the implementation of the Nafey Committee recommendations, Reducing via voce from 38 to 18, no seat cut, rejection of 3 level qualifying exam for M.Phil/Ph.D admission, implementation of minority deprivation points, implementation of reservation in direct Ph.D admission, implementation of reservation in faculty post and revoking their suspension. They also wanted the rollback of fee hike and 'punishment for the ABVP students for mob violence on Najeeb'.

The administration had earlier also assured the students that the deliberations and discussions with stakeholders are on and appealed to students who are on hunger strike to immediately end their fast and cooperate with the varsity. Meanwhile, the JNU students union has alleged that the varsity has issued a statement without confirming minutes of the steering committee meeting and false facts have been projected and they would continue with the protests.
