The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the national-level test Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, declared the results for it soon at its official website, jeemain.nta.nic.in. The JEE Main, conducted from September 1 to 6, is for admission to BTech, BArch and BPlanning programmes in engineering, architecture and planning. A total of 8.58 lakh candidates had registered for the exam. Around 6.35 lakh candidates, under 75% of the total, ultimately turned up for the exams. The JEE Main is conducted twice in a year. The first, in January, was written by over 10 lakh. The second JEE Main 2020 was scheduled for April but had to be postponed multiple times due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The JEE Main 2020 was conducted amidst stiff resistance from a section of students and the government of several states. They opposed the decision to conduct exams in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak and floods. The number of COVID-19 cases was rising and the two crises had disrupted critical public services such as transport. However, on August 17, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the NTA, allowing it to conduct exams. It subsequently declined multiple petitions to review that order and postpone JEE Main 2020 and also the medical entrance exam, NEET 2020.

The exams were conducted with states and central government ministries taking steps to help by providing public transport, opening hotels and lodges and running special trains.

For B.Arch, the council allows admission to candidates who have passed an examination at the end of the qualifying examination with 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and also 50% marks in aggregate of the qualifying examination.

For B. Planning, the candidates should have passed the qualifying examination with 50 % marks in Mathematics and 50% marks in aggregate of the qualifying examination.

This year

Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank' announced that JEE Main 2020 qualified candidates will now only need to obtain a passing certificate in Class XII examination irrespective of the marks obtained.

“Due to prevailing circumstances, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) has decided to relax the eligibility criterion for admissions to NITs and other CFTIs,” Mr Pokhriyal said.

He said that for admissions in Centrally Funded Technical Institutions and NITs, in addition to qualifying JEE Main, the candidate need to secure a minimum of 75% marks in Class 12 exams or rank among the top 20 percentile in their qualifying examinations.
