Wales gives India deadline to fix facilities
London: The Commonwealth Games team for Wales gave the organisers in New Delhi until late Wednesday to confirm that accommodation and venues are "fit for purpose", in the latest blow to the troubled event.

The move comes after England said the games were on a "knife-edge" and Scotland delayed its team's departure for India, while the Channel Island of Jersey also said it was considering postponing its team's leaving date.

Team Wales said that after a footbridge collapsed near one venue on Tuesday and a false ceiling fell down on Wednesday at the weightlifting venue it had to "examine how safe it is to bring athletes into this environment."

"We have given the Organising Committee a deadline of this evening to confirm if all venues and the Games Village are fit for purpose," the statement said.

"On the basis of that announcement, we will be contacting athletes via our team managers and advise them of the latest position and will issue a further update."

Several athletes have already pulled out of the October 3-14 event, including English Olympic 400m gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu and world triple jump champion Phillips Idowu, with Australia warning more of its competitors might follow.
