Ooty schools shut for third consecutive day as hunt for killer tiger continues

Police and forest department officials continue efforts to catch a tiger close to Ooty in Tamil Nadu

Ooty: 45 schools around the hill resort of Ooty in Tamil Nadu will remain closed for the third consecutive day today as a massive operation to nab a killer tiger enters its eighth day.

Three people were killed in suspected tiger and panther attacks near Ooty last week.

Forest officials have got fresh images and leads on the location of the big cat from cameras they had placed in the forest.

Around 500 forest and police personnel, including sharp shooters, are combing the forest area. They have also deployed three trained Khumki elephants and have set traps to catch the tiger alive.

"The animal has already caused harm to human life and we can't let him go as there would be more losses. We are sure we should be able to catch him soon," said K Lakshminarain, Chief Wildlife Warden, on Sunday.
