NGO demands traffic engineering cell in Pune

Pune: Pedestrians FIRST convenor Prashant Inamdar has asked the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to set up a central traffic engineering cell with qualified traffic engineers and representatives of the Traffic Police.

Inamdar conveyed his demand in a letter to the municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade and the police commissioner Meeran Borwankar.

Recently, Pune police commissioner Meeran Borwankar called the Pune City Traffic Committee's meeting and discussed various traffic related issues.

Representatives from the PMC, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) and some civic activists attended the meeting.

At the meeting, Pedestrians FIRST and some other organisations made suggestions to improve the traffic condition in the city.

Inamdar said two major reasons for the traffic problem were astronomical rise in number of private vehicles on roads and lack of traffic discipline for which appropriate remedial steps were definitely needed.

Moreover, some infrastructure related and other issues like defective road and junction design, lack of proper and prominent road signages, road markings, signal system and blinkers contribute to the traffic problem.

Besides the traffic engineering cell, Inamdar demanded that there should be a separate cell in the corporation with dedicated manpower and budget for maintenance of roads, road furniture, footpaths, road crossings and cycle tracks.Inamdar
