Madurai: Monkey menace haunts residents

Madurai: Monkey menace haunting the residents in several places in the district would come to an end soon with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department deciding to set up a Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre exclusively for Monkeys at the famous Alagar Koil Hills, according to District Forest officer Rakesh Jumar J.

He said the decision had been taken following complaints from the people residing at Adachanendal, Pudupatti, Pothumbu, Madurai Medical college areas and some other places in the district.

Quoting a survey, he said there were 3000 monkeys, in the Alagarkoil forest area. The monkeys, he said, had their own families and rivalry between the families was frightful and gruesome. The Weak families migrated to other places.

Forest Department would set up monkey rescue and rehabilitation centre in temple land at Alagarkoil at a cost of Rs 27.74 lakh, he said.

The centre would have a treatment facility.There was also a plan to do family planning operation for some of the male monkeys as the monkey population was increasing, he said.
