Girl drowns in swimming pool at JNU campus

Delhi: A 13-year-old girl drowned under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday night, while learning to swim at a swimming pool in the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus.

The police said the deceased was identified as Amrita Singh, a resident of Vasant Kunj.  "Amrita was learning swimming for two months at the old sports complex in Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her mother, Kiran and brother Jasraj, were with her when she drowned at 9 pm," said a senior police officer.

According to the officer, Kiran was sitting on the periphery while Amrita was learning swimming in water that was about three feet deep.

Kiran went out for some time and in the meantime, Amrita drowned. Kiran called the guards who fished Amrita out of the pool. She was rushed to a nearby private hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival. The hospital authorities informed the police about the incident.  Amrita's body was sent to AIIMS for post-mortem.

Police said that they would be able to comment only after getting the autopsy report.  They were interrogating the coach of the deceased in this connection. An official said that they also have taken the statement of Amrita's family members.

So far, no case has been registered. Amrita was a class VII student of a renowned private school of south Delhi. Her father is a businessman.
