City's lifeline pauses as motormen halt work briefly
Mumbai: Thousands of Mumbaikars getting ready to go home at the busy Churchgate railway station, were stranded briefly as some motormen did not report to work, apparently to protest suspension of a colleague.

"Trains services were disrupted for half an hour, from 5.45 pm to 6.15 pm as some motormen, who were supposed to report to duty during this period, did not do so," a Western Railway spokesperson said.

However, the suburban train services have resumed, he added. During this period, train services were operated from Mumbai Central station, he added.

The agitation, during the evening peak hours, left commuters stranded at stations and on platforms. Services on the Western line from Churchgate to Virar ran behind schedule following the agitation.

Last month, motormen called off their proposed strike after the railway management promised the Joint Action Forum of motormen that a fast track committee will be formed to look into all their grievances.

The motormen were demanding a hike in the basic salary of assistant drivers from Rs 1,900 to Rs 2,800 per month. They are also demanding an assistant motorman for every motorman who drives the trains.
