Child Marriage Averted in Indore

Indore: A 16-year-old girl was prevented from being getting married today by district authorities as part of its drive against child marriage.

District Women Empowerment Officer VPS Rathore said that acting on a tip-off, a team of officials reached Buddh Nagar area where preparations were going on for the marriage of the girl identified as Varsha.

Rathore said that the officials warned her parents that strict action will be taken against them if they go ahead with their plan to marry the minor girl following which they relented and gave an undertaking in an affidavit promising to not get her wedded until she turns 18.

As per law, marriage of a boy less than 21 and girl below 18 is a crime under The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 that attracts two years rigorous imprisonment or Rs one lakh fine or both.
