Before the state goes about creating a record for making 20,000 players compete at chess in December 2010, Gujarat will first witness a gala event revolving around the written word, under the 'Vanche Gujarat' campaign. On October 30, about 50 lakh students from across the state will read books together for one hour, between 9 am and 10 am.
While the event is nothing short of a national record, organizers say they are more concerned with the motive and final outcome of the event, rather than emphasizing on creating a record. The programme mainly targets inculcating the reading habit among people of Gujarat, especially children.
Hasmukh Adhia, principal secretary of the state education department, said, "The Vanche Gujarat programme is progressing well under the guidance of chief minister Narendra Modi. This mega event will be organised for citizens in general and for children specifically, on a large scale, to inspire them to read more."
He added, "About 50 lakh students of primary (above class V), secondary and higher secondary schools, as well as colleges, from across the state, will participate in this programme slated to take place just before their Diwali vacation. The event is sure to create history. It is expected that voluntary organizations will also come forward to participate in the event."
Adhia informed that the books to be read at the programme will not be text books, but motivational books instead, teaching good values. Also, the reading will not take place in classrooms, but in school compounds and gardens. "Teachers and parents will also be called in for participation, while inspirational slogans will be put up at the centres of reading. Proper care will be taken to ensure that the motive with which the programme is being organised, is finally achieved," he said, while appealing to the people to help make the programme a success.
