#IndiaAgainstCOVID19 Telethon Highlights: India Comes Together To Fight Against Coronavirus Outbreak

India Coming Together Against COVID-19 campaign, an RB and NDTV initiative, aims to provide a platform to highlight the works of the unsung heroes, NGOs and community leaders at the frontline of the hygiene battle against COVID-19.

It is a small effort to keep Indians well informed with medical facts and the news that matters the most in their daily lives during the current lock-down. A campaign of hope despite of all of us being isolated.

The campaign will recognise and acknowledge the unsung heroes who are at the forefront of this battle against the coronavirus – doctors, the police, community kitchens, the suppliers of essential commodities. Pan-India stories on the effort being made to combat the virus – narrated by the administrators, the police and government bodies. We will also showcase how hygiene and handwashing are critical in this fight against Novel Coronavirus.

Just a day before the lockdown, 15 of us from Bikers For Good went across Delhi and created awareness about proper handwash practices.

'It's time to introspect,' says Prasoon Joshi on #IndiaAgainstCOVID19 telethon

When we talk about standing together, we need to fight corona together. This is the time for humanity to unite. This is not the time to divide and blame, we need to focus on our country's fight against the virus. There's an opportunity here to learn a lot. We are also getting a chance to spend time with our family, I'm here in Delhi getting to spend time with my parents. We take a lot of things for granted so this is also a time for introspection. We should all be positive.

- It is a difficult situation but we are all in this together. I spend my time doing things like cooking, watching TV. But people out there are suffering even more, so we shouldn't be worried about spending time at home

- As soon as the lockdown is over, we will start the cinema halls and should ensure measures like sanitisation and social distancing in the theatre. We want to spread positivity. We need to ensure daily wage workers in film industry are also safeguarded.

Naina Lal Kidwai on #IndiaAgainstCOVID19 telethon, says lockdown can be eased in a phased manner:

- We have a list of hotspots, but if the green spots are safe we can feed the real estate and construction workers and have labour onsite, we may put them to work with proper regime. We can shut them if they violate rules, but we should at least begin.

- If we turn to the list of essential services, I would like to see the IT sector to be considered as an essential service. In the past West Bengal, IT sector was always given the focus, because of outsourcing of services. we need to facilitate the norms like social distance, hygiene, testing etc and try to restart those.

- 50% of our back office operations in HSBC were working in India amid the SARS outbreak, we didn't shut down the services. We need to ensure critical services can be run.

I hope everyone is indoor and safe. Our appeal to everyone to stay indoor for the entire community and the world. We are using social media to promote the message of social distancing and hygiene to tackle the situation. We don't know how we will cure from this and all we can do is stay indoor.

Apr 12, 2020 19:38 (IST)
Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand joins the Telethon from Germany where he has been away from his family due to lockdown:

- In Germany, people are in the culture of following the law. People automatically started stepping away from each other. I haven't seen any cops enforcing social distance. People are practising it themselves. They also have a decentralised health system here, death rate here is low because they acted very seriously.

- In this case first thing is to accept mistakes will be made by government and health ministry because it is a completely new situation. The main thing is whether you agree with anything or not, follow the command and regulations specially with social distancing and hygiene. We are trying to break the chain of the virus.

Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director, UNAIDS on what we have learnt from fighting HIV for 25 years:

1) We know it is important to take care of the community and those put in the frontline to fight the battle.

2) We know we must never compromise on human rights.

3) Don't accept stigma and discrimination - it is counter productive. We need to fight discrimination. Otherwise people will not come forward for testing

4) It is important to support the vulnerable.

We should look at resuming work in a phased manner with precautions: Niranjan Hiranandani, President, ASSOCHAM

- Let me assure you that we have have been taking care of all the workers, we've fed them, we have can do sanitisation, temperature checking. So with necessary protection in limited areas, work needs to resume. But with necessary protection with necessary govt directives.

- You can resume real estate with social distancing and monitoring. It can't be in 100 percent cases but in 70-80% cases with necessary protection work can resume.

- Small and Medium Enterprises with 10-12 workers, some of them can also resume work in phased manner, with complete protection and reasonable restrictions.
