Yamaha Motor India has filed a trademark for the YZF-R2, hinting at the possibility of a new addition to the R-series lineup, though nothing is confirmed yet. Interestingly, soon after this development, the company quietly discontinued the R3 and MT-03 in India. Both models were imported as CBUs, and their exit leaves space for Yamaha to potentially introduce new offerings, with the YZF-R2 trademark serving as the first indication of what may follow.

Although the R3 and MT-03 are still listed on Yamaha's official website, reports indicate that imports of both models have been halted in India. Dealerships, too, are said to have no remaining stock of either motorcycle, effectively marking their exit from the market despite the online presence.

Yamaha launched the R3 and MT-03 in India as CBU imports, positioning them as entry models in the middleweight category. However, their premium pricing limited appeal among buyers, resulting in modest demand. Sales volumes remained consistently low throughout their lifecycle, preventing the two motorcycles from establishing a strong foothold in the Indian market despite their role as accessible performance offerings.

The Yamaha R3 and MT-03 entered the Indian market with a premium price tag of Rs. 4.65 lakh and Rs. 4.60 lakh (ex-showroom). In an attempt to boost competitiveness, Yamaha announced a major price reduction of Rs 1.10 l

akh earlier this year, followed by an additional Rs. 20,000 cut after GST revisions. However, even with these adjustments, the two motorcycles struggled to attract buyers. Limited demand and consistently low sales eventually resulted in their discontinuation, marking the end of Yamaha's short-lived middleweight push in India.

With the R3 and MT-03 discontinued in India, Yamaha's current lineup includes the R15, MT-15, the FZ range, and the newly introduced XSR155. Beyond motorcycles, the Japanese manufacturer continues to offer scooters such as the Fascino, Aerox, and RayZR. Looking ahead, Yamaha is preparing to expand its portfolio with two eagerly awaited electric scooters, the Aerox E and EC-06, set to launch in India, marking a significant step toward its electrification strategy.
