Despite the impressive growth in electric cars and two-wheelers, the lack of robust infrastructure continues to pose a significant challenge to widespread adoption. On the occasion of World EV Day, it's the perfect time to explore practical ways to extend the driving range of your electric vehicle.
Use Regenerative Braking Wisely
Most EVs have multiple regen levels; however, only a few users know how to utilise the different levels. While the purpose of regen remains the same, that is, capturing the kinetic energy generated while braking and converting it into electrical energy, which is then stored back in the battery, different regen levels control how aggressively the vehicle recovers energy and slows down when the accelerator is released.
It is advised to use a low regen level on highways, prioritising gradual braking and a constant speed. Meanwhile, medium and high regen levels are advised for the city rides.
Avoid Fast Charging
While OEMs are pushing the sales of their electric vehicles with fast chargers, they don't want you to know that it only damages your EV's battery. While fast chargers can be useful in emergency conditions to top up your battery, their regular use can impact the EV battery primarily through increased heat generation and high voltage stress. Subsequently, in the longer run, a deteriorated battery health affects range.
Use Low-Resistance Tyres
Low-resistance tyres consist of special thread patterns, designed to minimise energy wasted to tyre friction and rolling drag. According to reports, low resistance tyres can improve the EV's range up to 4-7 per cent. While it costs more compared to the regular tyres, its advantage can save your pocket from hefty expenses in the long run.
Plan Your Route, Avoid Highways
EVs tend to offer a lower range on highways compared to the city. This is because the high speed on the highways increases the wind resistance on the vehicle, and the power needed to overcome air resistance increases exponentially, causing the EV to consume more energy to cover a particular distance. To save your range, try to avoid highways and prioritise the city route, or maintain a constant speed (with low regen level) on the highways in unavoidable conditions.
Reduce Some Weight, Avoid Unnecessary Accessories
While your petrolhead friend's motorcycle may flaunt some eye-catching aftermarket accessories. We insist on keeping your electric vehicle simpler; do not go for accessories that lead to significant weight addition or add aerodynamic drag. Doing so will put more resistance on the vehicle and increase the load on the motors.
