Top 5 Carmakers In India Based On CY25 Consumer Sales: Surprising Results

India's car market continued its upward climb in CY25, but a closer look at consumer sales reveals some interesting shifts among the country's biggest carmakers. While familiar names continue to dominate the charts, changes in market share and year-on-year growth tell a more nuanced story. From aggressive SUVs to steady mass-market performers, here are the top five car manufacturers in India based on CY25 consumer sales, and what their FADA numbers truly indicate.

1. Maruti Suzuki: Still On Top, But Share Slips

Maruti Suzuki remains India's largest carmaker by a comfortable margin. In CY25, the company sold 17,86,226 units to consumers, translating to a 39.91 per cent market share. While this keeps Maruti firmly in pole position, its dominance has slightly diluted compared to CY24, when it held 40.24 per cent of the market.

The dip is marginal, but significant. The company has also topped the chart in terms of production for CY25 with a figure of 22.55 lakh units. It even exported 3.95 lakh units in CY25.

2. Mahindra & Mahindra: The Fastest Climber

Mahindra emerges as one of the biggest winners of CY25. The brand clocked 5,92,771 units, giving it a 13.25 per cent market share, up from 12.08 per cent in CY24. This growth is no accident. Mahindra's strong SUV-led portfolio, combined with waiting-list-driven demand for products like the Scorpio-N, XUV700 and Thar, has clearly impressed the Indian buyers. Mahindra's rise also indicates a shift in consumer preference toward larger, more rugged vehicles. On the wholesale front, Mahindra dispatched 6,25,603 units from its factories.

3. Tata Motors: Growing Volumes, Slight Share Pressure

Tata Motors secured the third spot with 5,67,607 consumer sales in CY25. However, its market share dropped to 12.68 per cent, down from 13.18 per cent last year.

Despite increased volumes, Tata appears to be facing pressure from intensifying competition in the compact SUV and EV segments. The carmaker's wholesale for the year stood at 5,78,771.

4. Hyundai Motor India: Losing Ground

Hyundai Motor India sold 5,59,558 units to consumers in CY25, accounting for a 12.50 per cent market share. This marks a noticeable decline from 13.76 per cent in CY24.

Hyundai's position reflects slowing momentum in some of its key segments. While models like the Creta continue to perform well, increased competition and an ageing product lineup in certain categories appear to have impacted overall traction. The brand's Creta SUV registered strong wholesale of over 2 lakh units, while the updated Venue registered over 55,000 bookings uptill the year-end.

5. Toyota Kirloskar Motor - Quietly Strengthening

Rounding off the top five is Toyota Kirloskar Motor with 3,20,703 units sold, translating to a 7.17 per cent market share, up from 6.39 per cent last year. Toyota's steady rise can be credited to strong demand for its MPVs and successful badge-engineered products developed in collaboration with Maruti Suzuki. The brand's reputation for reliability continues to work in its favour.
